This is interesting...
In researching for my law paper I'm writing tonight, I came across this little gem that I wish I had known about earlier...
Parental Involvement Leave, N.C. Gen. Stat. § 95-28.3.
This statute requires employers to grant four (4) hours per year of unpaid leave to any employee who is a parent or guardian of a school-aged child so that the employee may attend or otherwise be involved at that child’s school. The leave shall be at a time mutually agreed upon by the employer and the employee. The employer may require an employee to provide the employer with a written request for the leave at least 48 hours before the time desired for the leave. The employer may require that the employee furnish written verification from the child’s school that the employee attended or was otherwise involved at that school during the time of the leave. The statute also prohibits employers from discharging, demoting, or taking other adverse employment action against an employee who requests or takes this leave. The statute further provides a private right of action for any employee who has been discharged, demoted, or otherwise retaliated against. There is, however, no explicit private right of action to redress an employer’s refusal to grant the leave.
OK I'll admit it, business law is kind of interesting.

30 day squat challenge
Beginning on May 1st, I am starting a 30 Day Squat Challenge with my friend Misty. The idea is that you perform an increasing number of squats every day for 30 days, starting with 50 squats and working your way up to 250 squats by the end of the month.
Um... I better have an ass of steel by the end of the month if I can do 250 squats a day.
My tush hurts just thinking about it.
Wish me luck!

Can't. Stop. LAUGHING!
I came across this little beauty last week, but this Real Actors versions of this is CLASSIC. Enjoy!
Ten is Perfect
Ten is perfect was the catchphrase for the TarHeel 10 miler that was going on in Chapel Hill this weekend. Being that this was a race all through Chapel Hill, I signed up for the wussy version - the 4 miler.
I got up at the crack of dawn to drive myself to Blue Heaven to be ready for a 7am start. The sun wasn't even up yet when I got there! Oh and it was FREEZING cold. Why is it always freezing when I run these things??
I lined up with the other 4,000 people who decided to participate in this, and I was reflecting back on what this race supported - the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center. What a great way to give back!
The race started at the Bell Tower on campus and wound it's way through back roads and neighborhoods. It was a beautiful route, but I was disappointed we didn't actually run around campus more, or even down Franklin Street.
At least there was encouragement everywhere you looked!
The race was fairly painless for most of the way, until I hit the 3 mile marker. The race coordinators thought racing the 3rd mile up Laurel Hill Drive would be a great idea. For anyone that doesn't know Laurel Hill Drive in Chapel Hill, it's the steepest incline I've ever seen. It actually reminded me of San Francisco! There was a Laurel Hill Challenge worked into the race, where the person who got up the hill fastest won a crazy prize. Let's just say I didn't win. :)
The finish line for this event was in Kenan Stadium and there were tons of people cheering as I crossed the finish line! It was very cool! Imagine my surprise when I looked down and realized that the race route was not an even 4 milers, but rather 4.29 miles!
I was so proud of myself that I finished this race. I honestly felt like I could have run 5 miles! That's the next goal!
The best part of finishing this race was the awesome medal I got this time. Check it out!

Heartbroken
I'm so heartbroken today. I spoke with my best guy friend (from high school) this morning and it seems his mother has taken a turn for the worse. We found out back in December that his mom had colon cancer. After one operation in January, she's had so many ups and downs and unfortunately is going to be staying down. My friend told me that she's back in the hospital and the doctors have told him she has two months tops to go.
I'm heartbroken for him. This is the same friend that lost his father when we were 15. His father died of a heart attack. And he's also an only child. If it stands to reason that God only takes the best, He certainly did when he took Mr. Cox. Now he's taking Mrs. Cox too.
Today I weep for my friend. I hope his mother is not in any pain and I hope her last days on earth are filled with love and laughter. I'm continuing to pray for her and hope that somehow the doctors are wrong.
And I will be adding her name to the list when I run this weekend. Cancer doesn't discriminate.

Being a December baby
I saw this on Facebook earlier today and I had a good laugh because most of this is true...
DECEMBER BABY
Loyal and generous. Patriotic. Competitive in everything. Active in games and interactions. Impatient and hasty. Ambitious. Influential in organizations. Fun to be with. Easy to talk to, though hard to understand. Thinks far with vision, yet complicated to know. Easily influenced by kindness. Polite. Having lots of ideas. Sensitive. Active mind. Hesitating, tends to delay. Choosy and always wants the best. Temperamental. Funny and humorous. Loves to joke. Good debating skills. Has that someone always on his/her mind. Talkative. Daydreamer. Friendly. Knows how to make friends. Abiding. Able to show character. one guy/girl kind of person. Loveable. Easily hurt. Prone to getting colds. loves music.

For Vicki
Psalms 34: 17-18
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Fun fact
My father, without fail, says the exact same thing when he leaves me a voicemail. EVERY TIME. It goes a little something like this:
"Hey. Who's your Daddy!? Call me - I love you!"
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

The nights are lonely, the days are so sad

And I'm missin' you

True Confession Tuesday
1. My left eye doesn't like whatever pollen has let loose over the last few days. Spring came in with a vengeance and my eye keeps watering and it's driving me nuts! Claritin isn't working and I can't take Benadryl unless it's ok to sleep facedown and drool on my desk. Yeah, didn't think so.
2. I haven't backed up my work computer since SEPTEMBER. Omg if Erik (my CTO) reads this he's going to kill me. It wasn't until he mentioned this morning "put that document on the wiki so that your computer doesn't crash and you don't lose everything all over again" that it put the fear of God into me. Don't worry Erik, I'm backed up and have a calendar notice to do it every week. Whew!
3. I went back to my favorite gym today. I didn't see anyone I knew and it made me sad. I'm actually afraid to go back to the other gym to cancel my membership - they are so friendly and nice in there and I don't want to hurt their feelings!
4. Day 5 of NO SODA and I'm about to flip my shit. Good lord, what I wouldn't do for a Diet Dr Pepper right now...

Song lyrics of the day
She's the sun set shadows
She's like Rembrandt's light
She's the history that's made at night
She's my lost companion
She's my dreaming tree
Together in this brief eternity
Summer days, winter snows
She's all things to behold
-"She's my kind of rain" Tim McGraw

Wisssssssser...
The company I work for has an unusual name. It's WiserTogether. I can't tell you how many times I've had to spell the company name for people when I'm on the phone with them. But even though I've worked there for almost 3 years, I still can't seem to spell the word "wiser" correctly. I consistently, without fail, spell the company as WiderTogether.
HAHA! WIDER! TOGETHER! Every time.
HAHA! WIDER! TOGETHER! Every time.

Suck it BOA!
I finally paid off my Bank of America credit card back in November. It used to be my MBNA credit card - you know, the one that EVERYONE had from college because you signed up to get a free tshirt?
Well, let me just say that it was a personal victory to never owe another dime to either of those companies. The only thing that made this accomplishment sweeter was the fact that I overpaid the final bill and Bank of America had to pay ME.

HA! Who's laughing now! SUCK IT, BOA!

Song Lyrics of the Day
"No reason to get excited,"
The thief, he kindly spoke
"There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late"
-"All Along the Watchtower" Jimi Hendrix
(I love the DMB version of this. I've been JAMMING this morning)

...I completely forgot that Brier was home on Spring Break. I remembered when he popped his head around the corner in my office and asked me what in the world I was singing.

Laugh in the face of mother nature with your own personal hands free
umbrella dome that will shelter you from the rain while giving plenty of
room to talk on the phone, keep your hair all fancy, and ensure you’ll get plenty of looks from jealous haters.
